Albany, the state capital of New York, sat on the west bank of the Hudson River in 1906, with Rensselaer lying directly across the water on the east bank. Albany's economy rested on state government, the river trade, and a large number of manufacturing works, including the Albany Felt Company and the locomotive shops of the New York Central line, whose tracks ran along the riverfront. The Hudson, deep enough for ocean-going vessels as far upriver as Albany, carried coal, lumber, and freight, and the Dunn Memorial Bridge and steam ferries linked the two shores. Residents in 1906 knew the city as the seat of the legislature and the home of Erastus Corning's businesses, a place where the river and the rail lines shaped daily work. Rensselaer, smaller and more industrial, depended heavily on the same rail and river traffic.
