Albany in 1911 still carried traces of its Dutch founding, when fur traders built Fort Orange on the Hudson in 1614. By the early twentieth century, city politics were dominated by the Democratic organization of Dan O'Connell, whose ward leaders handed out jobs and favors to working-class voters. Families could escape the downtown streets to Washington Park, a landscaped tract on the city's west side with a lake at its center. Many residents measured the city's recent changes by the bustle of State Street and by the new commercial blocks rising near the Capitol.
