In 1911, Carthage, New York, was a village of mill workers, farm families, and merchants in the north country, where the Black River runs past its streets. The paper industry that had long anchored the village still drew on the northern forests for pulp, and rail lines carried its products and the region's dairy goods to larger markets. Automobiles were just beginning to appear on the village streets, while horses and wagons still did most of the local hauling. Residents of that decade were also living through the wider changes of the Progressive era, when towns debated schools, public health, and better roads, and this view of the village shows the buildings and streets where those debates played out.
