Boonville, New York, sat in the foothills of the Adirondacks in Oneida County in 1911, a village built along the Black River. Its economy rested on the surrounding farms, where dairying and cheese making were central, and on the lumber and tanning trades that had long drawn on the region's hemlock and hardwood forests. Rail lines carried goods out of the valley and brought a growing number of summer visitors north toward the lakes and wooded country beyond the village. The place was a small, close community where church, school, and village affairs shaped daily life, and residents would have known it as a working river town at the edge of the wilderness. This photograph records that ordinary village in the early twentieth century, before the First World War reshaped the country.
