Niagara Falls, New York, in 1914 was a city of about 30,000 people, most of whom earned their living from the electric furnaces and plants that lined the gorge. Edward Goodrich Acheson had founded the Carborundum Company in the town in 1896, and its abrasives made the place known to machinists far beyond western New York. Workers in these plants labored in shifts that followed the demands of the furnaces, and many of their families lived in neighborhoods within walking distance of the mills. Local residents of the period would have recognized the city first as a manufacturing center that drew its power from the river, with the falls themselves a daily backdrop to ordinary work.
