The wide panoramic format stretches the crowded stands from one edge of the frame to the other, so the viewer takes in the whole audience at once. Panoramic photographs like this were popular in New York in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when specialized cameras could record a broad sweep of a scene in one exposure. Baseball was one of the city's most popular spectator sports at the time, and its ballparks drew crowds that were hard to capture any other way. Looking closely at the rows of spectators gives a sense of how the game brought people together.
