The East River panorama stretches across the water with Manhattan's skyline rising on one side and the great bridges crossing the channel in view. Panoramic views like this were popular in the early twentieth century, when photographers used wide-format cameras or stitched exposures to capture the rapid growth of lower Manhattan's towers. The bridges visible in such scenes, including the Brooklyn Bridge completed in 1883, were engineering landmarks that connected the city's boroughs and shaped how New Yorkers moved between them. Looking closely, you can see how the dense rooftops and spires reflect the city's ambition during its era of vertical expansion.
