Looking across the North River, as the Hudson was often called in the city, this 1901 view takes in the Manhattan waterfront and its crowded piers, ferry slips, and shipping. By the turn of the century the riverfront was the working edge of New York, where steamships, freight, and ferries moved people and goods in and out of the city's expanding harbor. The panoramic format of the Pan Photos series was well suited to capturing such a long stretch of busy shoreline, and the picture offers a useful record of how the city's waterfront looked just before the skyline grew much taller.
