This panorama stands out for its wide, unbroken view of the water's edge, a format that let photographers capture a whole stretch of shoreline at once rather than a single building or street. Around 1900, New York's waterfront was a dense working edge of piers, ferry slips, and steamships, and the skyline behind them was a mix of church steeples and newer commercial buildings rising as the city grew. Panoramic prints like this were popular then for documenting how fast the port and the city were changing. Looking across the scene, you can see how the activity along the docks and the outline of the buildings behind them together show the city's commercial energy at the turn of the century.
