The Brooklyn Bridge, stretching across the East River between Manhattan and Brooklyn, was one of the great engineering feats of the late nineteenth century. Its wide sepia panorama lets the eye travel the full span of the cables and towers, a sweep that a standard frame could never capture. The bridge was designed by John A. Roebling and completed under his son Washington Roebling, opening to traffic in 1883. Worth noticing is how the panoramic format emphasizes the bridge's scale against the working river and the city behind it.
