Elmira, New York, in 1909 was a river city in the Chemung Valley of the Southern Tier, shaped by rail and heavy manufacturing. The Erie Railroad maintained major shops and yards there, and the city's factories turned out iron and steel goods, including the bridge girders and structural work for which the Empire Bridge Company was known. Such works drew workers and their families, and the city's growth ran alongside the rail lines and the river flats below them. Elmira was also home to the State Reformatory, opened in the 1870s and nationally known for its reform methods, and to Elmira College, one of the earliest colleges to grant degrees to women. Many residents of the day would have known the city first as a railroad and manufacturing town, and second as the summer home region of Mark Twain's in-laws, the Langdons.
