Vassar College sat on a hilltop campus above the Hudson River in Poughkeepsie, New York, in 1912, when it was one of the leading colleges for women in the country. Brewer Matthew Vassar had founded it in 1861, and its central Main Building and landscaped grounds made it a familiar sight to river travelers and to the city's residents. Poughkeepsie in those years was a manufacturing and river-trade town, with factories and rail lines that linked it to New York City and New England, and the college was one of its most widely known institutions. In 1912 the campus was a place of women's study, sports, and dormitory life, and national debates over women's suffrage were close at hand, since New York voters were weighing the question at the polls that year.
