Vassar College sat on the high ground above Poughkeepsie and the Hudson River in Dutchess County, New York, in 1912, and the view of its grounds and buildings in Arlington reflects a campus that had been growing for half a century. Matthew Vassar, a brewer, founded the college in 1861 as one of the first institutions to offer a full four-year liberal arts degree to women, and by 1912 it was widely known for that distinction. Poughkeepsie itself was a manufacturing and river town, linked to the rest of the state by steamboat, the New York Central line on the east bank, and the railroad bridge across the Hudson completed in 1889. Students, faculty, and local residents in 1912 would have known the college as a point of pride for the city and a center of women's education in the region.
