Camp Perry, on the shore of Lake Erie near Port Clinton in Ottawa County, Ohio, was a state shooting range in 1913 that drew marksmen from across the country. The site served as a training ground for the Ohio National Guard and took its name from Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, whose fleet won the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813. Since 1907 the National Matches, the country's major rifle competition, had been held there each summer, bringing soldiers, sportsmen and spectators to the lakeshore. Port Clinton relied on fishing, boat traffic and summer visitors, and the camp added a steady flow of outsiders to its streets. Marksmanship then carried real military weight, since it trained citizen soldiers who might be called into national service.
