Camp Perry, on the Lake Erie shore near Port Clinton in Ottawa County, Ohio, was still a young military range in 1913. The state had developed it as a rifle range for the Ohio National Guard, and it soon became the site of the National Rifle Association's national matches, drawing marksmen from across the country. The lakeshore towns of the region depended on fishing, farming, and a growing summer trade, and the range brought visitors, tents, and competitors to a stretch of shoreline that had long been known mainly for its water and orchards. In 1913 the United States was still at peace, but the Guard's training at places like this was part of a broader push to make citizen soldiers more skilled with their rifles. The panorama shows that work in progress: a long line of firing positions set against open ground, with the lake country beyond.
