South High School in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1913 stood in a city of more than half a million people, grown fast on the strength of its iron and steel works, factories, and oil refining along the lakefront. Public schools were expanding to keep pace, and a high school on the south side served families whose children were moving into clerical, skilled, and white-collar work rather than leaving school early for the mills. The students and staff assembled here were the pride of a neighborhood that measured its standing by its school's teams, clubs, and graduating classes. Civic debates over schools, streetcars, and public health filled the local newspapers as the city's reform-minded leaders pushed for better services.
