In 1913 Cleveland was a city of well over half a million people, built on oil refining, steel, shipbuilding, and the iron ore that arrived by lake freighter at its Cuyahoga River docks. Its office workforce was expanding along with its factories and railroads, and the High School of Commerce was one of the public schools that trained young people for that work in bookkeeping, stenography, and business practice. Families who sent their sons and daughters there hoped they would move from school straight into clerical jobs at the city's banks, insurance firms, and manufacturers. This photograph of the school's students captures a institution tied closely to the city's commercial growth in the years before the First World War.
