Public Square in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1912 sat at the center of a city that had grown rapidly on iron, oil, and shipping. Cleveland was then one of the largest cities in the United States, and its downtown was filled with department stores, office blocks, and streetcar lines radiating from the Square, which was the hub of the city's electric trolley network. Refining of petroleum, which John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil had built into a national enterprise, and the freight moving through the Great Lakes port made the city a major manufacturing and commercial center. Residents of the period knew the Square as the civic heart of the city, the place where parades, rallies, and holiday crowds gathered beneath the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument.
