In 1912, Ohio State University occupied a young campus on the north side of Columbus, the state capital, after growing out of the land-grant college established in 1870. Its halls were still going up, and students from farms and small towns across Ohio came to study agriculture, engineering, and the mechanical trades. Downtown, the state constitutional convention was meeting that year, keeping lawmakers and reporters busy and underlining the city's role in state government. Many Columbus residents knew the university through its football games and commencement exercises, which tied the campus to the wider community. The school was only a few decades old, and its expansion reflected Ohio's move from farming toward industry.
