University Circle in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1908 was a young cluster of cultural institutions taking shape on the city's eastern edge, well removed from the smoke of the downtown mills and the rail yards along the Cuyahoga. Cleveland had grown into one of the largest manufacturing cities in the country, built on iron, steel, oil refining and shipping through its lake port, and its wealthier families increasingly chose to build their homes and civic gifts in these newer suburban neighborhoods. The Cleveland Museum of Art and the Case School of Applied Science were both in the planning and building stages around this period, and the district was laid out around a landscaped circle linked by new streetcar lines. Residents of the city would have known the area as a showcase of industrial wealth turning toward education, art and parks.
