In 1908 Cincinnati was a major Ohio River city of about 360,000 people, and its economy rested on manufacturing, meatpacking, and soap and candle making, with Procter & Gamble among its best-known firms. Machine-tool shops and piano makers added to a industrial base that drew workers from Germany and other parts of Europe, and the city's neighborhoods on the hills above the river were filling with families who commuted to downtown jobs. The Ohio River flood of early 1907 had inundated low-lying districts only a year earlier, so residents in 1908 were still repairing homes, levees, and business premises along the waterfront. Cincinnati was also known for its German-American social clubs, beer gardens, and musical life, and local people would have recognized the city first by its river traffic and its factory smoke.
