Cincinnati in 1908 was a river city whose downtown streets served a large manufacturing economy. Its Ohio River port carried freight, and its factories made machine tools, soap, and packaged goods, while meatpacking, once the city's pride as "Porkopolis," still counted for much of its trade. Streetcar lines carried workers and shoppers into the central business district from neighborhoods on the surrounding hills. Residents of the day knew the city for its industry, its German-American breweries and singing societies, and for Fountain Square, the civic gathering place at the center of downtown.
