Mingo Junction, a river town in Jefferson County on the Ohio River a short distance below Steubenville, was in 1908 a place where heavy industry and extractive work sat side by side. Steel and iron mills along the river drew a large share of the local workforce, and the rail lines running through the valley carried coal, ore, and finished goods out of the district. Oil and gas drilling had been part of the eastern Ohio landscape since the late nineteenth century, and the derricks and storage tanks in a view like this one would have been a familiar sight to residents, who depended on both the wells and the mills for wages. The town was growing with the mills, and its streets and neighborhoods were shaped by the shift schedules and the needs of its immigrant and working families.
