Springfield, Ohio, in 1908 was a county seat in Clark County whose economy rested on farm machinery and grain. Its factories, including the large harvester and implement works, drew workers from across the region, and the city's several rail lines carried finished goods out and raw materials in. Flour and feed mills like the Ansted & Burk operation handled the wheat and corn grown on the surrounding farms, linking the city's streets to the fields beyond its edges. Residents of the period knew Springfield as a manufacturing center in the heart of Ohio's agricultural country, a place where the grain came in by wagon and rail and the milled product went back out to market.
