Springfield, Ohio, in 1907 was one of the country's leading centers for farm machinery, and the Champion Works was its best-known employer. The Champion line of mowers, reapers, and binders had been built in the city for decades, and the plant had become part of International Harvester when that company was formed in 1902. Its smokestacks and long shop buildings marked the eastern edge of a city of several tens of thousands, where many families depended on the factory's payroll and the rail lines that carried finished machines to farmers across the Midwest. Residents often called the city a manufacturing town shaped by the harvest. The works shaped daily life there, from the shift whistles to the local labor disputes and civic debates that followed the company's fortunes.
