Youngstown, Ohio, in 1905 was one of the country's busiest iron and steel centers, with mills strung along the Mahoning River and the rail lines that carried their output east and west. The Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company, formed in 1900 from several smaller firms, had made the valley's steelmaking a single large enterprise, and its furnaces and rolling mills drew workers from across Europe, including many Italian, Slovak, Hungarian, and Polish families. Those men labored long shifts in heat and noise, and their neighborhoods on the hillsides and river flats grew quickly around the works. Residents knew the city above all as a place where the mill whistles set the daily routine and where the health of the company largely shaped the health of the town.
