Oberlin College in Lorain County, Ohio, was still a small college town in 1905, and the campus was known across the Midwest for its long record of admitting women and Black students alongside white men, a practice it had followed since the 1830s. Its founders had been tied to the antislavery movement, and the town's reputation for reform, including its role in the 1858 Oberlin-Wellington Rescue, remained part of local identity well into the twentieth century. Students and townspeople lived close together, and much of daily life revolved around classes, church services, and the college's well-regarded music program. This view of Talcot Corner records one of the college's older campus intersections at the start of the new century, when Oberlin was balancing its academic reputation with the modest growth of a railroad-era Ohio town.
