Oberlin, in Lorain County, Ohio, was in 1906 a college town shaped by its founders' commitments: Oberlin College had admitted women from the 1830s and Black students from its early years, making it one of the most distinctive campuses in the country. The college, its preparatory department, and its conservatory of music drew students from across the Midwest and beyond, and the town's economy rested largely on that student population along with local farming and small trades. Oberlin was also a center of abolitionist history and temperance activism, and residents of the period still spoke proudly of those traditions. This panoramic view records the campus and surrounding streets as they looked in the early twentieth century, when the college was expanding its buildings and reputation.
