South Professor Street in Oberlin, Ohio, was part of a village whose identity in 1907 still rested on its college. Oberlin College, founded in 1833, had admitted women and Black students from its early years, a record of reform that made the small town known well beyond Lorain County. The street's large houses were home largely to faculty families, and the conservatory's music students and visitors gave the neighborhood a rhythm set by the academic calendar. Daily life centered on churches, lectures, and concerts, along with the steady comings and goings of students and tradesmen who kept the village connected to larger cities such as Cleveland.
