Lakeville, on the shore of Long Lake in northeastern Ohio, was a small rural village in 1907, shaped by farming and the summer trade that lake resorts drew from nearby cities. Farm families sold dairy, produce, and fruit to local markets, while the region's electric interurban lines and steam railroads carried city visitors out for weekends and vacations. Many residents would have known the lake first as a source of ice in winter, cut in blocks and stored for the warm months, and later as a place for boating, bathing, and cottages. Village life centered on churches, schools, and the general store, and its social calendar followed the seasons of planting and harvest. Little of the village's day-to-day record survives in detail, so the wider story of the Western Reserve country around it is the surest guide to what it was like then.
