In 1905, Silver Lake sat just outside Cuyahoga Falls in Summit County, Ohio, a short ride from Akron, which was then becoming the center of the American rubber industry. Tire and rubber plants drew workers and families to the area in these years, and the surrounding towns grew quickly as a result. Silver Lake was a popular summer destination, with cottages, boating, and picnic grounds that drew city residents on weekends. The lake's appeal as a leisure spot reflected a wider pattern in northeastern Ohio, where streetcar and interurban lines carried people from crowded industrial cities to lakes and parks. For residents of the valley, the lake was a place to escape the mill and factory shifts of the week.
