In 1905 the Tuscarawas River ran through the farm country of east-central Ohio, a valley still shaped by the old Ohio and Erie Canal, whose locks and towpaths followed much of the river. The canal had lost most of its freight to the railroads, which now carried the grain, livestock, and manufactured goods of river towns such as New Philadelphia and Coshocton to larger markets. County seats and trading centers in the valley drew farmers on market days and neighbors to church, fairs, and town errands. Residents knew the river as a working waterway and a summer place for swimming and boating. The flood of 1913 would soon devastate many Ohio river towns, and the valley's canal works never fully recovered.
