Oberlin, in north-central Ohio, was in 1905 best known as the home of Oberlin College, founded in 1833 and remembered as one of the first American colleges to admit women and Black students on equal terms with white men. The town was small, with its life centered on the campus, its churches, and the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, which drew students from across the country. Nearby, the railroad connected the community to Cleveland and Toledo, carrying students, faculty, and farm produce from the surrounding Lorain County countryside. Civic life was shaped by strong abolitionist and temperance traditions that had defined the town for generations. This 1905 panorama of the college captures the campus as residents would have recognized it, with its academic buildings and open green spaces.
