Oberlin College, in Lorain County in northern Ohio, looked much as it did in 1906 when this panorama was made, with brick and stone halls set among shade trees at the edge of a small farming town. Founded in 1833, the college had long been known for admitting Black students and women, and that reputation still shaped how residents saw their community. The town's economy depended heavily on the college, its conservatory of music, and the surrounding farms that supplied markets across the region. Students and townspeople alike would have known Oberlin as a center of higher education with a strong abolitionist past, and they took pride in that reform heritage.
