Canton, Ohio, in 1906 was a manufacturing city of steel, rolling mills, and machine shops, and it was still shaped by the death of its most famous resident, President William McKinley. McKinley had practiced law in Canton, served in Congress from the district, and been elected governor before winning the presidency, and he was shot in Buffalo in September 1901. Residents took his loss personally, and the city spent the following years raising money and planning a lasting tribute. This unveiling drew civic leaders, veterans, and townspeople to the streets and grounds of the memorial effort, which was a public statement of how deeply the city identified with the slain president. The ceremony reflected a community that measured its standing by the man it had sent to the White House.
