Canton, Ohio, in 1917 was a city of factories and metal shops, and the McKinley National Memorial on its hillside was where residents went to honor William McKinley, a local lawyer and politician who was assassinated in Buffalo in 1901. The tomb, completed in 1907, held McKinley and his wife, Ida, and it drew visitors from across the country. Industry was reshaping the town, with the Timken company making roller bearings for carriages and then automobiles. In April 1917 the United States entered the First World War, and local attention soon shifted from memorial ceremonies to enlistments and war production.
