In 1917, Canton, Ohio, was a manufacturing city whose steel mills, foundries, and bearing and safe works were running at full stretch. Camp Canfield, at Himes, became a gathering point for Ohio National Guard units after the United States entered the First World War that spring. Canton residents knew their city as the place where William McKinley had practiced law and where he was buried, and the war now drew local sons and neighbors toward training camps and, soon, France. Railroads carried recruits, equipment, and supplies between the camp and the factories turning out materials for the war effort.
