Camp Sherman, outside Chillicothe in Ross County, Ohio, was built in 1917 as the United States Army began training men for service in the First World War. The camp was named for General William Tecumseh Sherman, and its construction brought a sudden wave of workers, contractors, and soldiers to a small city that had long lived on farming, milling, and its position on the Scioto River. Chillicothe, Ohio's first state capital, was used to a slower pace, so the influx of draftees and new payrolls reshaped local streets, boarding houses, and shops almost overnight. Residents who watched the camp rise would have seen it as the most important change in their town since the railroads, and before the year was out its barracks were filling with recruits. This view captures the camp in its first year, when raw wooden buildings stood in rows across the open country.
