Springfield, Ohio, in 1917 was a manufacturing city in Clark County, long known for farm machinery and the foundries and shops that served the surrounding countryside. The Robbins & Myers Company, a maker of electric fans, motors and pumps, was among the firms that employed many local workers, and company bands like this one were a familiar part of large Ohio factories. The United States entered the First World War in April 1917, and that year local plants began shifting part of their output toward the war effort and wartime bond drives. A band of this kind would have marched in parades, played at factory events and performed at patriotic gatherings, so it reflected both the workforce and the civic life of the town.
