In 1918, Camp Sherman, on the open ground beside Chillicothe in Ross County, Ohio, held large numbers of trainees preparing for combat in Europe. That autumn the camp was struck by the influenza pandemic, which spread quickly through crowded barracks and overwhelmed its hospital wards, killing many soldiers. The sickness reached the city as well, and local officials curtailed public gatherings while families grieved the dead. When the Armistice was signed on November 11, 1918, the camp's purpose changed almost at once, and the scene captured here shows a training ground still in the middle of its wartime work.
