Columbus, Ohio, hosted the World Prohibition Conference in 1918, when the question of banning alcohol was moving quickly through American politics. The Anti-Saloon League and its allies drew delegates to the city to press their cause at a time when the nation was at war and grain and sugar were being rationed. Columbus was then a growing state capital and railroad hub, with breweries, factories, and a rapidly expanding population tied to the Ohio State University campus on its north side. Residents of the period would have known the city as a center of the temperance movement, a place where debates over saloons and public morals were carried on in newspapers, churches, and the statehouse. Within months, the national prohibition amendment would be ratified, and the conference stood as one of the last large gatherings before that change took hold.
