Oberlin, Ohio, in 1909 was a small college town in Lorain County, where Oberlin College shaped daily life more than any factory or mill did. The college, founded in 1833, had long been known for admitting Black students and women, and the town's abolitionist record, including its role in the Underground Railroad and the 1858 Oberlin-Wellington Rescue, was still a point of local pride. Residents of the period knew the place as much for its college, its churches, and its commitment to reform as for its farms and its trade with the surrounding countryside. The arch on the college grounds, raised in the 1880s to honor Oberlin men who died in the Civil War, was one of the campus landmarks that townspeople and students passed every day.
