Oberlin, Ohio, in 1909 was a small college town in Lorain County, and Oberlin College had shaped its character since the school opened in 1833. The college admitted women and Black students early, and its role in the 1858 Oberlin-Wellington Rescue, which helped free a man seized under the Fugitive Slave Act, remained a source of local pride. Most townspeople depended on the college, its conservatory of music, and the farms and shops that served them, while rail lines linked the town to larger markets to the north. The arch pictured here, one of the stone and brick landmarks of the campus approach, reflected a community that kept its attention on public causes and on the young people who came to study there.
