Western College in Oxford, Ohio, photographed in 1909, was a women's college in a small Butler County town about 35 miles northwest of Cincinnati. It began in 1853 as the Western Female Seminary and took the Western College name in 1894, when it was one of the older schools in the country devoted to educating women. Oxford was also home to Miami University, the state's second university, so the town was shaped by its campuses and the students who came and went with the academic calendar. In 1909 the Progressive era was pushing wider access to higher education, and Western's students, drawn largely from Ohio and nearby states, would have known the college as a place of serious study set among well-kept grounds.
