Silver Lake, in Summit County, lay a short ride north of Akron, which in 1905 was becoming the rubber capital of the country. Firestone and Goodyear were both building large plants there, drawing workers from across Ohio and Europe and filling the city's neighborhoods with new houses. Electric interurban trolleys made lakeside spots like this one easy to reach on summer weekends, so families from the industrial city came out for swimming, boating, and picnics. For residents of the surrounding villages, the lake was a place of leisure, while Akron's factory whistles set the rhythm of daily life just a few miles away.
