Zoar, Ohio, in Tuscarawas County, was a village of about the same size in 1905 as it had been for decades, shaped by its founding in 1817 by a group of separatists from Württemberg led by Joseph Bimeler. For most of the nineteenth century the community held its land, mills, and workshops in common, and its gardens, orchards, and brick houses set it apart from neighboring farm towns. The communal system was dissolved in 1898, when the society's property was placed under a joint-stock company, so by the time this street was photographed the village was mainly a quiet farming community of descendants and newer residents. Its economy still rested on agriculture and small trades, and its German heritage remained visible in its architecture and in the memories of older families who had lived through the society's final years.
