Akron, Ohio, in 1907 was becoming the center of the American rubber industry. B.F. Goodrich had moved its operations to the city in 1870, and Goodyear and Firestone were both expanding there in the early 1900s, drawing workers from across Ohio and from abroad. The Ohio and Erie Canal, which had earlier carried grain and coal past the city, had helped Akron grow as a milling and manufacturing town, and the railroads and factory payrolls now shaped its neighborhoods, churches, and civic life. This view of the works shows the sprawl of factory buildings that residents of the time would have associated with the city's fast-growing economy and its reputation as the "Rubber City.
