In 1907, Berea, Ohio, a small town about 12 miles southwest of Cleveland, was known for its sandstone quarries and the grindstones cut from them, which shipped across the Midwest. Baldwin University, a Methodist-affiliated college founded in Berea in the 1840s, shaped the town's civic and social life, and its students and faculty made up a large share of the local community. Spring festivities such as May Day were a familiar part of college life then, with pageants, costumed students, and outdoor programs drawing townspeople onto the campus. The photograph records one of these gatherings, when Berea still saw itself mainly as a college town and quarry community rather than as a suburb of the growing industrial city to the northeast.
