Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1907 was the center of American steelmaking, with mills lining the Monongahela and Allegheny rivers and smoke hanging over the valley. The Carnegie Institute in the Oakland district, opened in 1895 with money from steel magnate Andrew Carnegie, combined a library, museum galleries, and a music hall, and it drew workers, students, and the city's prosperous families alike. This Founders Day observance honored the institute's origins and brought civic leaders, teachers, and visitors together on its grounds. Carnegie had sold his steel company to United States Steel in 1901, and by then he was giving much of his fortune to libraries and schools across the country. For Pittsburgh residents, the institute stood as a sign that their city aspired to be more than a mill town.
