The flood that swept through Pittsburgh in March 1907 turned its downtown streets into navigable waterways, and this view captures that moment, with rowboats gliding past and residents wading through the water. The Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers all meet at the city, so high water there could quickly submerge low-lying districts near the riverfronts. Pictures like this one were widely circulated in the years that followed, and they remain a vivid record of how the city's residents coped with the disruption of a river that was both its lifeblood and its hazard.
